Nuancing Identity

2022 Clay and ceramic underglaze 22inx8inx14in This sculpture shows what some might consider contradictory identities in unity. On display are visuals that relate to both the transmasc experience with a bust that has top surgery scars and the lesbian experience with the labrys axe. The sculpture references antiquity with the all-white look that allows the pink scars to shine through as the predominant element of this nuanced identity. The symbolism refers to what some people call he/him lesbians, but the general idea of contradictory identities is valid. Queerness has nuances, and sometimes labels and strict definitions aren’t enough to capture complex identities.

Puppet of Law

2024 Chicken wire, paper mache, and yarn 22inx8inx14in This piece is about feeling helpless in the face of the anti trans laws and legislation being proposed and passed by state and federal governments to control and oppress trans bodies. It is a commentary on how these laws directly impact our physical bodies and minds. The chicken wire figure represents the essence of feeling unseen because society at large has created a “boogie man” out of trans people instead of seeing us as human. The base, the eyes, and the top surgery scar are papier-mache'd with printed out pages from some of the 876 anti-trans legislative bills that have been put forward to show the constricting nature that legislation has on trans people. Lastly, the yarn that represents the blood of trans people who are being harmed at the hands of the US government bodies.
